Big Bill Morganfield
[Thursday, September 30, 2004]

Big Bill Morganfield had played in Saskatoon at the Odeon Nightclub on Novemebr 13, 2002. I had read about him in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix. In the article it mentioned that he had been a teacher. After the show I approached introduced myself, my involvement in the Saskatoon Blues Society and that I was a teacher. Aside from telling him that I really enjoyed his show, I asked him if he’d be interested in doing a Blues in the School presentation at my school the next time he was in town. He said he’d be glad to.

The next time Big bill was on tour the Saskatoon Blues Society booked him for a show. During our negotiations we asked Bill if he’d be willing to make a school visit. To his credit, Big Bill Morganfield made a "Blues in the School" visit to Mr. Wihak’s grade 5 and Mr. Jones' grade 6 classes at Silverspring School. Students had been studying about blues music and had prepared many questions for Bill to respond to. They asked him questions about blues music, his musical heritage, and his experiences as a blues musician. They also asked him questions about his family, favourite foods, sports, etc. and as a result got to know him better. I just happened to have my guitar and Fender Blues Junior amp nearby and he was able to play a couple of songs.

Bill is a former teacher and the students warmed up to him quickly. Students lined up for autographs and Big Bill kindly obliged. THANKS Big Bill!
